Horse paddock management

Posted on 07. Apr, 2010 by in Blog

Spring is the time of year when all our horses are tiching to be turned out 24/7. It has not stopped raining since the VWH Point to Point took place on our farm on 21st March 2010 and so some TLC is needed for our paddocks!

Our final bunch of old season lambs have gone to market and our ewes are all in their respective lambing fields so the horse paddocks are free to be worked. We harrow twice, add grass seed as necessary, and roll with our grass rolls. Our new harrows lift dead grass and break up the surface to really give our grass swards the best chance when the temperature allows for more growth. Our agronomist keeps an eye on soil quality, weed control and seed type so that we can control the grass effectively.

This action plus on going care through the summer puts our paddocks back in action before another wet/British winter. We find that it is only by working with the owners of our various horse groups, and how they want their paddocks managed, do we get the right result for the horses and the paddocks long term.
