Sunshine tightens supply of horse haylage for 2011 / 2012.

Posted on 26. Apr, 2011 by in Blog

Well we are now at the end of April in 2011 and still no rain. The UK is well behind average rainfall for 2011 and locally Cirencester is no better. At the time of writing the forecast does look any better either. Luckily we have taken on a neighbouring farm amounting to an extra 115 acres [...]

Good results for this year’s haylage

Posted on 13. Nov, 2010 by in Blog

A difficult harvest produced a limited haylage cut for this winter but what we have been able to produce is proving to be fantastic! The quality is there and so is the dry matter. Our hay is also proving popular with the ponies. Having carried out weed control, we have all our haylage fields shut [...]

Rugging up for winter at Plummers Farm Stables

Posted on 04. Oct, 2010 by in Blog

We had frost last week down on the farm which gave a shock to our freshly clipped sheep flock! Our liveries are all being rugged up at night and with the recent wet weather more are bringing their horses in. As we have so much grazing to share around, horses can stay out all year [...]

Straw is all under cover and harvest finished!

Posted on 22. Aug, 2010 by in Blog

Having expected an early harvest, we started harvesting at the normal time on 27th July, quickly finishing the oil seed rape, and moving on to the spring Malting Barley harvest at the beginning of August. The grain is sold on contract and ends up making Stella & Coors, but the straw is baled for our [...]

Haylage Harvest Finished

Posted on 14. Jul, 2010 by in Blog

Finally after rainfall in early June, our haylage harvest got off to a flying start. Whilst temperatures hit the 80s, we cut baled and wrapped all our grass for haylage. We also had all our hay in by the end of June. The cold spring and limited rainfall has clearly limited growth resulting in supplies [...]

DIY stable yards require constant care

Posted on 12. May, 2010 by in Blog

After one of the coldest winters on record, we are finding gate posts, gateways, fencing and access tracks have all been damaged and require repair. Our grazing fields all benefit from hard standing areas for the horses but even these have struggled to cope. It has meant more work than usual in carrying out maintenance [...]

Horse paddock management

Posted on 07. Apr, 2010 by in Blog

Spring is the time of year when all our horses are tiching to be turned out 24/7. It has not stopped raining since the VWH Point to Point took place on our farm on 21st March 2010 and so some TLC is needed for our paddocks! Our final bunch of old season lambs have gone [...]

The joys of DIY livery

Posted on 23. Feb, 2010 by in Blog

We have a couple of stables available but we find people are always moving around and with 40 to choose from there is usually space coming up that we know about. The layout of the yard is such that each block of 6 – 8 stables has their own facilties, making for a clean and [...]
