All our haylage fields are now looking good after a mild winter and with these constant showers we hope to produce a record yield for our growing number of clients. Extra wrapping, careful storage, quality control and going that extra mile means our clients keep coming back year after year.

If you would like to discuss your haylage requirements for 2012/2013 then please give Ben a call.

Well we are now at the end of April in 2011 and still no rain. The UK is well behind average rainfall for 2011 and locally Cirencester is no better. At the time of writing the forecast does look any better either.

Luckily we have taken on a neighbouring farm amounting to an extra 115 acres of grassland for our horse haylage and horse hay enterprise. We have prepared the ground well last month for a cut this June so we are set for a record horse haylage harvest this year…subject to rainfall! Even with limited rain, with the extra land we should be able to supply all our customers.

Please call Ben now to discuss contract options to suit your requirements for 2011 and 2012.

A difficult harvest produced a limited haylage cut for this winter but what we have been able to produce is proving to be fantastic! The quality is there and so is the dry matter. Our hay is also proving popular with the ponies.

Having carried out weed control, we have all our haylage fields shut up for winter with the aim of having a bumper harvest in 2011….we shall see!

Yet again our haylage is proving to be of good quality and consistent, and having been doing this for 9 years, that is what we are aiming for with our feed.

We had frost last week down on the farm which gave a shock to our freshly clipped sheep flock! Our liveries are all being rugged up at night and with the recent wet weather more are bringing their horses in.

As we have so much grazing to share around, horses can stay out all year but by the end of October we are all usually bringing horses in at night.

Grass has been growing well this Autumn which is great news after a difficult growing season – the longer this lasts the better – but we have a good stock of haylage and hay to last us through until next summer. Haylage samples have been excellent so we are all very pleased with our harvest.

Lets see what the winter brings!

Having expected an early harvest, we started harvesting at the normal time on 27th July, quickly finishing the oil seed rape, and moving on to the spring Malting Barley harvest at the beginning of August. The grain is sold on contract and ends up making Stella & Coors, but the straw is baled for our liveries’ bedding.

Good weather hit us and stayed long enough for us to bring in the straw and get it under cover ready for the winter.

Most starw yields locally are down by 40%, much like this year’s hay and haylage yields, but as we produce our own we have a good stock.

We have since finshed our wheat harvest on 17th August with average yields – a great relief as more rain arrives.

Our newly acquired 6 stables are filling up ready for winter.

And we have just started our new season haylage – wow! Very pleased with the results and this bodes well for the 400 tonnes in store!

Finally after rainfall in early June, our haylage harvest got off to a flying start. Whilst temperatures hit the 80s, we cut baled and wrapped all our grass for haylage. We also had all our hay in by the end of June.

The cold spring and limited rainfall has clearly limited growth resulting in supplies being 20% down but luckily we had taken on extra grass to compensate. We now have the right tonnage to look after our repeat customers and some left for new ones.

Sampling begins soon and we would expect quality to be good.

The dry weather has restricted grass in our paddocks and our liveries are all looking in good form. With 40 acres of paddocks we have more than enough grazing to go around (all year) and some left over for the sheep as well!

For a free sample of haylage for large yards (as they are 300kg bales) please do email or ring Ben

After one of the coldest winters on record, we are finding gate posts, gateways, fencing and access tracks have all been damaged and require repair.

Our grazing fields all benefit from hard standing areas for the horses but even these have struggled to cope. It has meant more work than usual in carrying out maintenance work whilst we have this dry spell. Mind you it still feels too cold for May! A real concern when monitoring growth of our 90 acres of pasture shut up for haylage.

As previously mentioned people are always moving around and I have just had a call from one DIY livery stable user who will be leaving in June. Please call if you are considering a move. Thanks. Ben
